Short Take: Intel introduces new chipset for notebooks

Intel introduced Monday a chipset for notebook computers that contains an integrated graphics unit, an evolutionary step that will likely lead to cheaper portable computer prices. The 815EM chipset essentially lets computer makers skip the step of putting a separate graphics chip into their products. Chipsets, which serve as a data conduit between the processor and the rest of the computer, began to absorb graphics functions in early 1999 in desktop computers and have become quite popular. The chipset will sell for $47.50 each in quantities of 1,000.
