Jetstream leads voice-over-broadband

Revenue from sales of voice-over-broadband equipment topped $28 million during the first half of 2001, according to a new study conducted by communications research firm RHK. Jetstream Communications led the market with 30 percent of total revenue, followed by CopperCom at 21 percent, TollBridge Technologies with 14 percent, ComMatch at 13 percent and Zhone Technologies at 6 percent. Accelerated Networks' market share slipped to 2 percent from 21 percent last year, the study shows.

Voice-over-broadband technology allows for multiple digital phone calls carried over a single high-speed Internet connection. The technology is aimed at reducing communications costs for business customers. Adoption of the technology has been slow in the United States, where the DSL (digital subscriber line) industry is hurting. But installations have increased in Asia, South America and Europe, particularly in Germany, according to RHK.
