JDS Uniphase, the worlds biggest maker of parts used in fiber-optic equipment, cut 700 contract jobs at its plant in Ottawa, according to Adecco, the agency that supplied the workers. JDS fired 400 who worked at the plant for less than 12 weeks and gave the rest layoff slips, said Adecco spokeswoman Victoria Mitchell. Adecco will try to find new jobs for the workers, Mitchell said. JDS couldn't immediately be reached to comment.
