Opera ships for Linux

Opera Software, a browser maker based in Oslo, Norway, released an update to its browser for use with the Linux operating system. The new software, previously released in "beta," or test, versions, is the first complete browser for Linux based on Opera's newly rewritten code base--revealed nine months ago--that's designed to be faster and to hew more closely to industry standards.

Features new to Opera 7.11 for Linux include "FastForward," a navigation tool that gives the user a spontaneously generated list of links associated with the present page; "Rewind," which takes the surfer back in order of Web site, rather than Web page; "Slideshow," which assembles the image links on a given page and lets the user click through them; and "Notes," which lets people write notes about a Web page or gather clips from it so that references to the note call up the page's address.
