VeriSign target of patent suit
VeriSign, which registers Internet addresses, has been sued over claims that its Web site security products infringe patents, the company said in a filing. In the suit, filed Feb. 2, Leon Stambler claims VeriSign violated two of his patents with its Secure Site service and Payflow products. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Delaware, seeks an injunction against the Mountain View, Calif.-based company and unspecified damages.
"While we cannot predict the outcome of this matter...we currently believe that the claims against us are without merit and we intend to vigorously defend ourselves against these claims," the company said in its 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. According to the filing, Stambler lists four other co-defendants: Bedford, Mass.-based RSA Security; Atlanta-based First Data; Redwood City, Calif.-based Openwave Systems; and Palo Alto, Calif.-based OmniSky.
