Coolsavings settles patent lawsuit

Online direct-marketing company Coolsavings.com settled its patent lawsuit against Hot Coupons last week. As part of the settlement, Hot Coupons will pay a royalty to Chicago-based Coolsavings for a limited license to use Coolsavings' patented electronic coupon system.

Coolsavings sued Hot Coupons in 1998. The dispute was one of nine patent-related lawsuits filed by Coolsavings. The company has since settled seven of the suits, including one against IQ.com in December. Coolsavings still has outstanding patent suits against BrightStreet.com and Catalina Marketing.
