Intel invests $10 million in British start-up

Intel has invested $10 million in U.K. chip design company Mirics Semiconductor. Mirics has developed radio frequency identification, or RFID, chips that enable mobile phones and computers to receive content based on any number of technical standards used globally. Intel plans to give the Hampshire-based company management and technical advice, as well as introduce Mirics to potential investors.

Simon Atkinson, CEO and founder of Mirics, said there is a huge global interest in addressing the technological challenges that mobile broadcasters face. He said the company needs to be able to get its product to the market, particularly in Asia-Pacific countries. Intel has been pouring cash into chipmaking facilities lately, including a plant in China and a $300 million chip-testing factory in Vietnam.

Gemma Simpson of Silicon.com reported from London.
