AMD leaks notebook chip details

Advanced Micro Devices is preparing a notebook chip based on its Athlon 64 processor that will consume less power than current Athlon 64 notebook chips but more than Intel's competing chips do, according to a posting at CoolTechZone. The Athlon XP 2700+ will consume 35 watts of power. While that's less than other Athlon 64 mobile chips do, it exceeds the 24.5-watt ceiling a number of Intel's Pentium M chips have.

AMD executives said they expect to release a 35-watt part soon. The information came out because of an inadvertent posting on AMD's Web site that has since been cleaned up. An AMD spokeswoman wouldn't comment on the issue but said leaks like this "have been known to happen." Last year, AMD inadvertently released a document that detailed all of its major press events for the second half of the year.
