HP signs up for VMware server software

Hewlett-Packard is working to integrate VMware's server software with its ProLiant Intel servers, the companies said Wednesday. VMware's software lets an Intel server be split into several "partitions," each running its own copy of Linux or Windows but sharing the underlying hardware. HP and VMware will jointly develop and sell eight-processor servers that companies can use to replace several smaller servers.

HP, along with Sun Microsystems and IBM, has more sophisticated partitioning abilities with its Unix server line, but is working to spread the technology to its Intel servers as well. VMware also has a similar partnership with IBM.
