VMware wins customer, updates software

VMware will announce Monday that Tohoku Electric Power Corporation in Japan has bought more than 1,400 copies of the company's software. VMware's software lets an Intel computer run several versions of Windows and Linux simultaneously. Tohoku Electric used the software to let a custom program written for Windows 95 run on Windows 2000 computers, enabling the company to upgrade its PCs without scrapping or rewriting the custom program.

And this week, VMware said it had released version 3.1 of its $329 software for workstations, adding support for the beta version of the upcoming edition of Windows for servers as well as support for several other operating systems.
