Short Take: Justice approves Bell Atlantic, Nynex merger

The Justice Department has approved the merger between Bell Atlantic and Nynex, concluding that the merger between the two regional phone companies does not violate antitrust laws. The merger still awaits approval from the Federal Communications Commission. The combined firm would serve 39 million telephone lines and 5 million wireless customers in 13 states, the District of Columbia, and overseas markets.
