Report shows LCD monitor shipments up

Worldwide shipments of liquid-crystal display monitors rose 23 percent in the second quarter of 2001 compared with the same period last year, according to research firm DisplaySearch. Shipments were up 131 percent to a record 2.9 million units year over year. Cathode-ray tube monitor shipments fell 13 percent in the second quarter compared with last year and were down 11 percent for the year.

Average selling prices for LCD monitors fell 16 percent in the second quarter compared with the first, and that downward trend should continue into the third quarter, as the average selling price is expected to drop 20 percent. DisplaySearch also expects Japan's LCD monitor market share to drop from 44 percent in the first quarter to 23 percent in the third quarter because of weakness in the economy and market saturation.
