Apple investigates iPod update problems

Apple Computer said Thursday that it is investigating reports that some iPod owners have had trouble updating their devices to take advantage of the company's latest version of its iTunes jukebox software.

The Mac maker on Wednesday released an iPod software update in conjunction with its enhancement of iTunes. The iPod software is required for iPods to take advantage of the new features of iTunes 4.5 and the iTunes Music Store. However, a number of iPod owners say that when they run the software that is supposed to upgrade their devices, the software cannot detect their iPod.

"Apple is aware of a few isolated reports and is looking into it," the company said in a statement provided to CNET News.com. Apple encouraged those who encounter a problem to contact AppleCare.

The iPod update was released Wednesday in conjunction with an update to Apple's iTunes jukebox. The new version of iTunes adds a number of features including the ability to print jewel case inserts and create "iMix" playlists that can be shared with users of Apple's music store. With the new version, Apple also changed the way iTunes enables music sharing in an effort to block various add-on programs that allowed file swapping or contravened the Digital Rights Management technology Apple uses to protect songs sold through iTunes.

Christopher Hiller, a software developer in Portland, Ore., said he encountered the problem after downloading the iPod updater and new version of iTunes on Wednesday. Hiller posted his experiences on his Web log.

"iTunes sees it fine, my Mac sees it fine," Hiller said on his site. "The update, apparently, disagrees."

Isolated Problems?
The problems are NOT isolated, not by a long shot. Just go to any Itunes, or Apple message board and you will read hundreds of posts from people who are experiencing this problem. I have a third generation 15g Ipod and made the mistake of upgrading. This thing is a replacement Ipod and only 2 weeks old, I've purchased $50 in music that I can't load onto my Ipod because my Ipod is no longer recognized by my computer or Itunes. Sure it charges just fine, but it won't recognize it to transfer music or to upgrade the Ipod, or restore it. So basically I've just been screwed. Can anyone say CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT! I've tried every single remedy given by Apple and not one of them has worked. They better fix this fast. I will never buy another Ipod...neva eva eva! Because if this is how you treat loyal customers, I'd hate to see how you treat enemies.

Ipod Firmware Problems
I did an update on my Ipod & the damn thing crashed. I'm hearing this is happening to a lot of people. I'm going to have to send it in to be fixed. It's driving me nuts not being able to listen to my tunes. I'm telling people to avoid Ipods.

iPod Updating
Recently my sister and I have been experiencing problems with updating our iPods. When we plug them into our computer, they charge, but they don't update. Up until reading this article, I tried almost everything. I have called into Apple and have done everything they have told me. This article now makes perfect sense. About two weeks ago I downloaded the new iTunes and ever since we have not been able to update. I would like for you to please keep me informed on when Apple is going to fix this problem.

Unaware of Problem at Apple Tech Support
I've been wrestling with this issue for the last three days, and
finally gave up, and called Apple Support.

EVERYONE that i spoke to says that they are unaware of a
problem. They are going as far as to tell me that I'm better off
buying a new iPod, because the cost for service will be in-line
with the cost of a new one. I didn't bother with the extended
"Protection Plan," and my iPod is a 16-months old. I for one
cannot afford to spend $300-400 every year or so for a new
iPod.

I hope that Apple is circling their wagons, to remedy this
problem, because I am asked by at least one middle agedco-
worker a week about my iPod. So far nothing but positive
feedback. That could tell.

The iPod Updater problem is for real - DO NOT do it!

'updating iPod' takes more than 16 hours already
I have a iPod nano 4G. I downloaded the new iTune and started updating iPod Software yesterday afternoon and it has been running for more than 16 hours and it is not done yet.

The iTune is freezing on my PC and the iPod just flash "do not disconnect." screen.

How can this take so long? Is this right?

I have the same problem. iTunes said there was a newer version available when I plugged my iPod Touch in earlier today, and now my iPod doesn't work! iTunes now says that my iPod is in recovery mode, and must be restored before it can be used with iTunes. When I try to restore it, nothing happens. I called AppleCare, and they would not help me at all, nor admit that this is a common problem right now. I asked the employee if he has heard of this happening to others, and he ignored my question. All he did was send me an email that was supposed to be for "trouble restoring an iPod" but it does not help at all.

I have restarted my computer a few times already, and it does not work. Please help!! My iPod was completely fine before agreeing to install the update this morning! I can't believe this!

I did an update for my ipod touch a few days ago.... BIG MISTAKE.... not have very poor battery life, only lasts about 8hrs if I'm lucky on STANDBY.... *** is going on... never had an issue before the update, my ipod battery would last for days before this update.... This is crap, I have to keep it plug in just to use it. Bit pointless to have a portable devise that needs to be plug in to use it.... come on Apple we need a fix for this or I'm never buying another of your products again......
