Apple acquiring DVD software maker

Apple Computer is buying privately held DVD software maker Spruce Technologies, the Mac maker confirmed Monday.

Apple confirmed the deal--reported earlier Monday by CNET News.com--in an e-mail statement.

"This acquisition further enhances Apple's position as the preeminent platform for DVD authoring," the company said. "Apple will offer a migration plan to existing Spruce customers to help them preserve their investment in Spruce software."

Apple declined further comment. Financial details of the deal were not released.

A representative at Spruce referred all questions to Apple's public relations department.

Founded in 1996, Spruce has Windows-based DVD authoring software for consumers and professionals. According to its Web site, the San Jose, Calif.-based company has 55 workers.

Apple has its own DVD authoring software, the consumer iDVD program and the business-oriented DVD Studio Pro--both introduced at Macworld Expo in San Francisco at the beginning of the year.

Word of the deal was reported earlier in the day by Mac enthusiast site CreativeMac.com.

In March, Apple announced it would acquire education software company PowerSchool for $62 million in stock.
