Online shoppers spent about $200 million last week, and toys are
emerging as a hot item as the holidays approach, according to a survey by
research firm PC Data Online.
The study, which polled 2,080 home-based Net users
in the United States during the October 28-31 weekend, found that toys beat
books and videos in online sales. Only music and software topped toys, the
study found.
"There appeared to be a transition last week from Halloween into the holiday
season. Online toy buyers exerted their strength and bought in impressive
numbers from toy sites," Cameron Meierhoefer, Internet analyst for PC Data
Online, said in a statement.
The study comes as retailers both online and off are gearing up for what is
expected to be a record holiday shopping season on the Web. Just yesterday,
online toy retailer eToys and the Gap said they are teaming up to cross-promote each
other's products.
Meierhoefer said that although computer hardware and travel made up the
highest dollar amount among items bought online, a greater percentage of Net
shoppers surveyed bought lower-priced goods such as toys, apparel, health
and beauty items, and sporting equipment.
Reston, Virginia-based PC Data Online said the survey participants are made
up of a sampling representative of the U.S. Net-using population in terms of
age and gender.
