Excite@Home's subscriber rolls grow; Pogo buy scrapped

Excite@Home, the broadband Internet service provider, said Tuesday that its worldwide subscriber base jumped just over 27 percent in the fourth quarter to 2.95 million.

The company said it added 637,000 subscribers during the quarter, meeting its target for worldwide growth between 25 percent and 30 percent.

Separately, Redwood, Calif.-based Excite@Home said Monday it has ended its agreement to buy Pogo.com, an online gaming site, but will keep its 10 percent equity stake in the site.

Pogo will continue to provide games to Excite@Home subscribers under its existing relationship, Excite@Home said.

Some conditions in the transaction were not met, so the company chose not to consummate the deal, Excite@Home spokeswoman Alison Bowman told Reuters.

Excite@Home would not provide further details.

Reuters contributed to this report.
