As a consumer...more companies still trying to out do each other in search means overall better results for me....If MS and Yahoo and the rest (New Jeeves!!)are still pushing (though Yahoo seems to have decided it likes 2nd place) the net result is better web experience for me. I don't particularly care if it is Google/MSN/Yahoo etc that gets me what I want.
I've heard (3rd or 4th hand at best, so don't take this as gospel truth) that Yahoo has been working their engineers ragged for quite a few months now rebuilding their engine from the ground up in an attempt to combat Google. Not necessarily a guarantee of anything, but perhaps Yahoo hasn't quite given up yet.
I agree with Mr. Macfederan. As long as companies put effort into making better search engines, then we all will benefit with better results from our searches. I just question whether those resources couldn't be put to better use elsewhere. Whether it be browsing, or something else, I'd like to see "bang for the buck" results come of the efforts. I think I'll take a wait and see attitude on their efforts.
There are no e-mail viruses, only Microsoft Oulook / Exchange viruses. That's whay they are called LookOut and Virus Exchange. Wrong!
The rest of the so-called productivity apps: There is no such thing as a document macro virus, only a Microsoft Office document macro virus.
Due to the security threats alone, these products are a non-starter in the best of class competition.
To add more fule to this fire, take in to consideration initial costs and total cost of ownership. In both cases were talking an order of magnitude of 300% higher costs from the next closest competitor on costs. Once again, the MS product is shot down before even taking off.
When MS led with the first optical mice that didn't require special mousepads they definitely had a best of breed product. The WheelMouse too was a definite winner.
Don't be so stupid as to think that MS can't ever have a best of breed. They may not keep the title long but they are competing and sometimes they do end up on top even if only for a moment though I'd say they still lead in the category of mice with their new wireless mice with the long battery life.
I really hope Microsoft will be able to compete with Google.. Why? So Google has competition it will be great to see what innovations they come up with through this.. It will be great to see.. Although the popularity is still with Google...
Also I think... two thumbs up with.. Origami project its something different from Microsoft, I must admit.. I think if they can put this product outright and maintain a fair price... Offer content via some new internet service and possibly go even thinner than what I had seen in the preview.. theres no telling what it could do... From what I can tell from the preview it looks to be a different OS interface other than Longhorn.. Some new interface concept.. it looks kind of neat... hope its compatible with with OS X..

But again...I say anyone willing to work on bettering their search function will end up pushing everyone to another level and that is good for all of us. Go Bill...on this one!
Besides who are you gonna trust, an organization that tells all on demand to the fed's, or one that fights questionable/illegal search and fishing expeditions for private identification data?
So what's new, just more Microsoft marketing talk to waste our time. Have you noticed that Microsoft TALKS, and Google DOES? Let us know when an MS Engineer (or engineering VP) says something that they have DONE.
Another subtler point - who decides if something is relevant? For my searches, I do; not Google, not Microsoft, not anyone else. So why doesn't MS create something and then let the market decide if they are "twice as good." I don't want MS to give me my opinion.
Twice as good as Google in 6 months? I can see people wanting to laugh with the wrong part of the anatomy.
