Chilling "Nobody shoots like Mike" site greets curious surfers

Many Web surfers looking for additional information about a shooting Tuesday at an Internet consulting company were led to a Web page with what appeared to be a chilling message.

The Web site Michaelmcdermott.com bears the same name as the 42-year-old suspect, Michael McDermott, who was arrested on suspicion of killing seven people in the offices of Edgewater Technology in Massachusetts. The opening page on the site had this message: "Nobody shoots like Mike."

The tragedy briefly put another Michael McDermott in the spotlight as he struggled to pull down the site or change the message, which was intended as a reference to his photographic abilities.

"My phone hasn't stopped ringing, and I've gotten a lot of emails," the Portland, Ore.-based photographer said in an interview.

When people search for "Michael McDermott" on Yahoo, the photographer's site is listed first. The message "Nobody shoots like Mike" appeared in white text on a black background, a phrase that McDermott said he borrowed from an ad campaign featuring basketball star Michael Jordan.

McDermott managed to have the page altered late Tuesday to remove the phrase.

He said traffic to the Web site surged to as many as 500 hits an hour when news of the shooting broke. He does not know how many emails he received because the traffic jammed his account.

"I don't want any black humor associated" with the site, he said.
