Netscape Communications and Silicon Graphics today announced that 56 companies have agreed to support an open, platform-independent specification for Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) called Moving Worlds.
Companies including Adobe Systems, IBM, Informix, Sega, and Sony will support the standard for 3D environments led by Silicon Graphics.
Moving Worlds uses Java and JavaScript to create behaviors, motion, and interactions and enables third-party plug-ins to be used unmodified, adding 3D capabilities to Web-based database, design, and other real-world applications.
In order to provide the technology to all Net users, Moving Worlds' software architecture allows 3D environments to be viewed on computer systems ranging from low-cost Internet PCs to powerful 3D graphics workstations, according to Silicon Graphics officials.
