FirstGov opens for business

The federal government is joining the ranks of e-tailers.

The government on Monday announced it would open up an online auction and shopping section on its FirstGov portal, consolidating sales of property, real estate, cars, souvenirs, books, gifts and government auctions in one spot.

The shopping section allows consumers to buy everything from used Defense Department aircraft to national park guides to souvenirs from the Kennedy Space Center. The site also includes links to the postal service, Amtrak and such federal loan agencies as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

It also helps connect government buyers to government-approved purchasing schedules and contract information.

The shopping section is part of the White House's e-Government initiative, a 24-step plan that's designed to make government services more streamlined and accessible to the government.
