Circuit City plugs into Amazon for sales

Amazon.com said Monday that customers who purchase certain electronics items at the online retailer will be able to pick them up at Circuit City stores nationwide.

The service is set to launch in November, at the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Circuit City, one of the United States' largest electronics stores, will offer thousands of items for sale on Amazon's site that will be available for pickup at stores.

For items offered by both Amazon and Circuit City, customers can have the goods shipped by Amazon or use the immediate pickup option from one of Circuit City's more than 600 stores.

The terms of the deal call on Circuit City to pay Amazon a percentage of the revenue from sales of Circuit City electronics on Amazon's site. The companies also said Amazon will be responsible for taking the orders and payments, while Circuit City will fill the orders and provide product-related customer service.

Circuit City also will accept returns on merchandise picked up at its stores.

Additional terms of the multiyear agreement were not disclosed, but both companies plan to offer additional services in the future.

Monday's agreement represents another deal in which a brick-and-mortar store has turned to Amazon for its online storefront technology. During the past year, Amazon has teamed with Toysrus.com, Borders and America Online.
