eBay launches 23 regional Web sites

Online auctioneer eBay today launched 23 regional Web sites, which create an online marketplace for items of regional interest, such as sports memorabilia.

eBay's regional sites are aimed at giving users an easier way to trade difficult-to-ship items, such as automobiles, musical instruments and sporting goods, the company claims.

As part of today's announcement, eBay said it has teamed up with Athlete Direct to allows its users to bid on sports equipment from local sports stars. Athlete Direct is part of Broadband Sports, an Internet provider of sports-related content and commerce.

The new regional sites include: Cleveland; Honolulu; Pittsburgh; Portland, Ore.; Houston; New Orleans, La.; Miami; San Antonio; West Palm Beach, Fla.; Greensboro, N.C.; Orlando, Fla.; Memphis, Tenn.; Buffalo, N.Y.; and Kansas City, Mo.
