Google vs Microsoft - a battle of the titans
by Don_Dodge June 14, 2006 4:59 AM PDT
Microsoft stunned Wall Street last month when it announced a plan to spend up to $2 billion more than expected next year. Much of that money will go to build out a world class computing infrastructure to rival, and exceed, Google.

Microsoft is in serious catch up mode, but is willing to spend the money to compete. Last year I wrote about "Google data centers and dark fiber connections" http://dondodge.typepad.com/the_next_big_thing/2005/11/google_data_cen.html
explaining how Google was buying up unused "dark" fiber from failing telecom companies, and using it to tie together its massive data centers around the world.

The battle has been taken to the next level. I wrote a story today about the battle of the titans. http://dondodge.typepad.com/the_next_big_thing/2006/06/google_data_cen.html
