Traffic buckles Microsoft site

Microsoft (MSFT), apparently overwhelmed with users, is having serious problems with its Web site.

The software giant is having trouble keeping its site accessible amid increasing traffic, a company spokeswoman confirmed this morning. Difficulties are expected in getting to the site through the end of June as the company upgrades it, she added.

Yesterday, for instance, the site was completely shut down for ten minutes.

The outage and problems have angered Web surfers who have been trying to get onto the pages, prompting them to question whether Microsoft can handle exponential growth on the Web.

Some used the problems to criticize the company's Web server software. "Maybe they should have bought Linux," one reader wrote to CNET's NEWS.COM.
