In response to the Jan. 22 article "H-1B visas jump in 2001":

I am a U.S. citizen with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in computer engineering, and I'll have finished my doctorate in the next few months. I also have nearly a decade of solid industry experience. Yet I was laid off last March from a company I helped start, and I still haven't been able to find a job.

It's very frustrating sending out hundreds of resumes and carefully targeted cover letters, but never getting any replies. Yet the United States still imports thousands of additional H-1Bs each year, complaining of a fictitious lack of skilled high-tech employees. If they can't find skilled employees here in the United States, they should contact me: Almost every high-tech worker I know is unemployed right now. It's very frustrating.

Time to get back to the 10th month of my job search now. Thank you for bringing this problem to light.
