Photo: Scratch-resistant DVD

Back to: Try scratching this DVD
Back to: Maxell: Feel free to bang this DVD around

Despite the fact that the surface of a TDK DVD-R disc with protective coating was scratched and smudged with fingerprints, a DVD drive was still able to read the disc's content.

Nice... but how about long scratches in the direction of travel?
Nice, but how about long scratches in the direction of
travel? If we use the typical blockbuster rental as an
example, expect motor oil, hair gel, and scratches that are
much denser and transit left to right instead of from the
inside of the disk to the exterior (as most of the scratches
in the sample picture were).

Hmmm...

Well, not so much in the data...
As you can see on this disk, only a small portion of the inner tracks contain data, and most of the scratching and smudging is not in this area. This reminds me of the early 80's when news reporters demonstrated the indestructiibility of CDs by writing with lipstick and pen on the label side of the disc!

PHOTO: SCATCH RESISTANT DVD
Can dvd's treated with this new polymer coating be successfully resurfaced to remove any scratches? This is important for hire companies that on sell their superceded hire stock. Scratched dvd's do not have a good resale value.
Also re the blue ray lasers can these treated dvd's be played on red ray players or do we have to go out and purchase blue lasers to take advantage of scratch resistant technologies.

Unfortunately it is virtually impossible to buy scratch resistant DVDs in Australia.

Someone needs to start promoting them through pre-schools etc, to stir up demand.
