    Hewlett-Packard announced it will implement the interswitch link (ISL) protocol from Cisco Systems in its HP Internet Advisor network testing tool. Using the ISL protocol, an administrator can gather and decode statistics on virtual LAN traffic, such as the percentage of network traffic a VLAN implementation is taking up. A VLAN is a broadcast domain on a network of switches that is intended for users in different sites. The VLAN test capability is available now from HP.

  • Mon Sep 9 1996 Short: UB Networks announced Fast Ethernet switch

    UB Networks announced the GeoRim/FE Fast Ethernet switch with support for eight dual-speed 10Base-T and 100Base-TX UTP ports. The switch also includes two expansion slots for ATM or VLAN connections. UTP and Fiber expansion modules are available that bring the capacity of the switch to 12 ports. Support for the Virtual Networking Architecture (VNA) is also included and will be expanded to incorporate multidevice Virtual Local Area Networking (VLAN) capabilities. A Gigabit Ethernet uplink module will also be available soon. The GeoRim/FE switch is available now at prices starting at $995 per port.

  • Mon Jan 20 1997 Short Take: Frontier ships WebCast

    Frontier Software later this month will ship a Web-based front end for its network troubleshooting tools. The new WebCast feature publishes all network traffic reports as Web pages, including Java-enabled alarms. WebCast also extends remote monitoring functions that can track client/server application traffic. WebCast works with Ethernet, Token Ring, Fast Ethernet, switched LANs, VLAN, Frame Relay, FDDI, and CDDI networks. WebCast will cost $2,495.
