Web-based email provider USA.Net announced the completion of a round of financing for approximately $23 million, including an investment from Netscape Communications. Previous investors include American Express and Philadelphia Ventures. USA.Net generates revenues from online advertising, content distribution, and service fees. Over the past six months, the service's subscriber base has grown by more than 50 percent. With this financing, the company hopes to increase its market share further.

Web-based email provider USA.net and Egghead Computer have formed an alliance to offer information and discounts "pushed" to USA.net's NetAddress subscribers who request it. Subscribers can register for news and product information to be pushed to their email boxes, and the Egghead deal also will feature discounts to NetAddress users, the companies said. Egghead's Net properties also include Surplus Direct and Surplus Auction.

Email outsourcing firm USA.net has collected $60 million in a funding round led by Chase Capital Partners that included GE Equity, ABS Ventures and Hewlett-Packard. The company named David Ramon as president and chief executive officer. USA.net, whose customers include American Express, HP and United Airlines, filed for an initial public offering in April and withdrew that bid in August.

Computer retailer CompUSA announced that net sales increased while same-store sales fell 1.7 percent during the first quarter of fiscal 1999. The company blamed the decline on lower prices, cutbacks in corporate spending, and the impact of previously announced store closures. Net sales increased by 18 percent to $1.4 billion from a year-ago quarter sales of $1.19 billion. CompUSA added they were pleased with sales of Apple Computer's iMacs.
