    Sylantro Systems, a communications software maker, has introduced a new module for its application softswitch technology that allows service providers to offer unified messaging services for business customers. Sylantro's ComCierge and ComTraveler software enables, among other things, a single phone number to ring a customer at multiple locations, including a mobile phone, based on certain preference settings. The software is part of Sylantro's effort to expand the functionality of its softswitch technology, which routes phone calls using software rather than expensive hardware. Level 3 Communications is testing the system.

  • Tue Dec 12 2000 Short Take: Zhone to acquire Xybridge for networking software

    Network equipment start-up Zhone Technologies, through a wholly owned subsidiary called Zhone Acquisition, said it will acquire Xybridge Technologies, a maker of voice call server software sometimes known as a "softswitch." Richardson, Texas-based Xybridge's software will be used within Zhone's network equipment for service providers. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

  • Tue Mar 13 2001 Qwest offers new IP voice service

    Qwest Communications International, a communications carrier, announced a new Internet-based wholesale voice service dubbed Qwest CyberVoice Interconnect. The company plans to sell the service to carriers, ISPs and other Internet companies. Previously, Qwest had offered Internet-based voice services targeted at consumers. The company signed a multiyear, multimillion pact with Sonus Networks to install that company's software-based switching technologies. Qwest's new CyberVoice service is based upon Sonus' "softswitch" products.

  • Wed Jul 12 2000 Short Take: Convergent Networks to acquire telecom software provider

    Start-up Convergent Networks, a maker of high-speed network switches, said it plans to acquire telecommunications software provider Technology Control Services (TCS) in a stock merger transaction. Though terms were not disclosed, Convergent chief executive John Thibault said the deal's worth was "significantly north of $100 million." The 100-employee TCS, based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., makes software called a "softswitch" that allows a communications network operator to easily build and provision new software services for its customers. The company will offer the combined technology in the fourth quarter of this year, according to executives. Convergent currently has four announced customers for its set of broadband switching devices.
