The KDE Project has released version 3 of its namesake software package, one of the two dominant packages for bringing graphical desktop features to Linux. The software includes improvements to printing, Internet browsing, file management and word processing.

  • Thu Feb 14 2002 KDE Linux desktop nearing release

The second beta of the new version 3 of the KDE Linux desktop user interface was released, the KDE Project said Thursday. The final version is scheduled for release in the second quarter, but in the meantime KDE is seeking large numbers of developers to test the software.

The project organizers hope the new version will help programmers translate their software designed to run on KDE 2. Improvements in the most recent beta include support for Handspring Visor synchronization, better scripting and other features in the Web browser, and features to make file management easier in the Konqueror software.

The new Mandrake version comes with support for XFS, ReiserFS and ext3, three "journaling" file systems that make rebooting faster. It also uses version 2.4.8 of the Linux kernel, the latest 2.2.1 version of the KDE desktop user interface and 2.2.1a of the Samba software for joining Windows networks.

Sun charges Linux sellers a fee to ship version 6 of StarOffice, much less than the $76 it charges retail customers but still more than the free version 5.2. Sun's pricing practices led Red Hat, the top seller of the Linux operating system, to stop including StarOffice.
