    Compaq Computer has launched the Presario 7000Z line of consumer PCs, featuring AMD's 1.33GHz Athlon processor and double data rate (DDR) memory. DVD-recording drives also are available as an option. The entry-level model, with the 1.33GHz Athlon chip, 128MB of DDR SDRAM, a 20GB hard drive, a 48X CD-ROM drive, a 56kbps modem, a Creative Labs 1373 sound card, speakers and a 17-inch monitor, sells for $1,459.

    Until now, Compaq had only offered DVD-R drives on Intel Pentium 4 models, but now will make them available on Athlon models. The entry-level machine sells for $2,160 and comes with a 1GHz Athlon processor, 256MB of DDR SDRAM, a 40GB hard drive, a DVD-R drive with six free discs, a 48X CD-ROM drive, a 32MB graphics card, a Creative Labs 1373 sound card, speakers and a 17-inch monitor.
