Stamps.com, a provider of postage via the Net, announced the completion of a $30 million private equity placement led by Paul Allen's Vulcan Ventures and Chase Capital Partners. The company also named to its board of directors Marvin Runyon, the recently retired U.S. Postmaster General, and David C. Bohnett, founder and chairman of GeoCities. Stamps.com said it will nationally roll out its Internet postage service by midyear.

Network Associates unit McAfee Software has formed a new Internet venture fund, named Vulcan, that has taken a stake in two startups. NeoPlanet and DirectWeb have each received an undisclosed sum from the new venture arm and have received placement on McAfee's portal under the partnership.

iVast announced Monday that it has received a $25 million third round of funding, led by Softbank Venture Capital. Other investors included Sun Microsystems, Macrovision, and previous investors BCE Capital, Centennial Ventures, Vanguard Ventures, Venture Strategy Partners and Vulcan Ventures. Santa Clara, Calif.-based iVast has raised a total of $37 million. The company has developed software using the MPEG-4 standard. The software enables content companies and service providers to create and deliver digital media such as animation, 3D graphics, and audio and video.

Cable TV programmer TechTV says Chairman and Chief Executive Larry Wangberg will resign after nearly five years with the company. After finding a replacement, Wangberg plans to pursue other interests while remaining on the company's board of directors.
The cable network and Web site, owned by Vulcan Ventures, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's investment firm, shed about a quarter of its staff in November because of the weakened demand for advertising. The company also underwent a shift in ownership during Wangberg's tenure when Vulcan bought TechTV from its founder, Ziff-Davis, in January 2000. TechTV distributes technology news, entertainment, product reviews and updates on tech stocks to about 30 million homes in 70 countries through its TV programming.

On-air and online network TechTV says it has inked a deal with news Web site ABCNews.com to exchange technology-related editorial content that will be featured on both sites. Under the deal, TechTV said it will provide ABCNews.com with the latest technology news and product reviews each week. While the stories will be branded as TechTV content, they will appear on ABCNews.com's Web site in the Science and Technology and MoneyScope sections, according to TechTV. In addition, viewers will find related links to relevant stories on TechTV.com.
TechTV is owned by Vulcan Ventures--the investment company of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen--which purchased it from Ziff-Davis in November 1999 for $320 million. In March, TechTV launched a live news program, dubbed Tech Live, aiming to bolster its coverage on breaking technology news. ABCNews.com is a news service of ABC News and part of the Walt Disney Internet Group.
