There's gold in them there URLs. Or at least that's what his agency told him. Hasn't anyone ever mentioned SEO to this guy. You don't need a domain name to get to the top of a search engine.

I'm afraid this is a case of vanity marketing, meets lazy corporate marketing with the slightest possibility that someone in HQ has worked out that the resulting PR from this story will be worth more than they paid for the URL in the first place.
