Proxim ships dual-band wireless equipment

Wi-Fi equipment maker Proxim on Wednesday began shipping a dual-band wireless access point capable of creating 300-foot wireless zones using both the 802.11b and 802.11a technologies. Equipment using the 802.11a standard is supposed to create a network that is five times faster than 802.11b.

Proxim introduced the AP 2000 dual-band access point in July. The initial products came equipped with 802.11b access and an empty slot where customers could later install 802.11a equipment. The dual-band access point is priced at $1,150. Owners of the version without 802.11a access can upgrade for $250, Proxim said.
